Verify Driving Licence Authenticity: DVLA Check Codes & Translations

In June 2015, the paper counterpart to the British photocard driving licence was officially abolished by the DVLA. Since then, driving entitlement, endorsements, penalty points, and disqualifications are held entirely online on the DVLA driver database.

To allow third parties (such as employers, car rental companies, or court officials) to verify driving credentials, drivers must generate a unique DVLA Check Code through the GOV.UK "Share your driving licence" service. This single-use code is valid for 21 days and allows the recipient to view the driver's legal categories, active penalty points, and licence validity safely without exposing sensitive identity data.

For non-British and foreign licence holders submitting paperwork to UK authorities or insurers, documents in a foreign language must be supported by an official certified translation produced by a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) or the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL). Documents from certain nations also require consular authenticity certificates to ensure legitimacy against international counterfeit databases.
